Whey Protein Shake (What is it?)

A whey protein shake is part of a high protein diet program. The concept is to substitute a shake for your normal breakfast meal, and perhaps even your lunch meal. Beyond that, you continue to eat in your normal, sensible manner. The shake itself is merely whey powder blended with soy or skim milk, or even water. The whey powder can be purchased in several different flavors. Vanilla and chocolate are common flavors. Beyond the protein powder and milk, you can add fruit to add additional flavor. Strawberries, bananas and blueberries are often used in whey shakes. You can use whatever fruit you like. Some also choose to add ice. The key to the whey protein shake is the 20 grams of protein. This is a considerable amount of protein for a single meal. In addition, it is whey protein, so it has extremely high absorption rates (in some cases 50% better absorption than egg protein). It is the amount, and the biological usefulness, that make the diet powerful. One fact of whey protein is that is low in carbohydrates and fats. You get very few calories in a shake, and those that you do get come from the protein. (more…)

Undenatured Whey Protein : What’s So Special?

What is undenatured whey protein ? Can I buy it in a health food store? What does it do, and why should I use it? Let’s start first with whey protein in general. This is the protein that has been isolated from whey. Whey is the liquid material that is left behind after the solids have been removed from cow’s milk. Manufacturers have processed this protein into mixtures that can be used for building muscle or for muscle building and muscle development. You can find a large array of whey protein powder to make a breakfast smoothie, or protein drink, at any general nutrition, weight training, or bodybuilding supplements store or supplier. Muscle Milk and Designer Whey are popular examples of this today for a breakfast smoothie, protein shake, or protein drinks. Whey protein is an excellent source of dietary protein, and is very effective in building muscle for athletic nutrition. It is also a good choice for anyone who would like to reduce their body fat, and build muscle through exercise and/or bodybuilding supplements. But all protein supplements are not created equal. This type of protein is classified as denatured. What does denatured mean? This simply means that the (more…)

Whey Protein Shake Breakfast — Speed Up Your Metabolism All Day With This 4-point Checklist

We’ve all heard the adage “breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” but in addition, we need to eat the right kind of breakfast and actually be able to have time to do so. Eating breakfast jump-starts your metabolism, which gets your body burning calories to fuel your brain, organs, muscles, etc. Your metabolism works best when fueled by small meals every few hours, and when you wake up in the morning, you haven’t eaten for about eight hours. Your metabolism is on “slow” until you eat. If you don’t eat breakfast, it stays on slow. When you eat the right things for breakfast, your metabolism gets a kick-start, your body is geared to burn fat rather than store fat, you feel satisfied not hungry, you can think clearly, and you are more productive, patient and learn better. To make your breakfast do all these wonderful things for you, you need three things at every meal: protein, fats, carbs. That’s where the whey protein shakes and smoothies come in. High protein drinks are fast and easy to make and still give you the necessary protein to satisfy the checklist. Four Key Items For a Fast Metabolism Checklist Get (more…)

The protein myth – how much protein do you really need?

Pioneering scientists, such as Dr. Peter Lemon PhD, have proved what successful gym users have known for years – building a great physique requires a diet rich in high quality protein! Increased protein intake also prevents muscle loss during dieting and is vital for any man or woman looking to add muscle or simply tone up. Research suggests you need up to 1.7-2.5g of high quality protein per kilo of bodyweight per day to build muscle as fast as possible e.g. an 80kg male needs 136-200g per day. So you know you need to increase your protein, but what is the best source? Proteins vary in their ability to supply high quality amino acids for muscle building within the body, based on their biological value (or BV). The higher the BV, the more effective the protein source. Whey protein (a refined and isolated protein derived from cow’s milk) is considered by scientists to be the ultimate protein, due to its high concentration of essential, non-essential and branch chain amino acids; and has a higher BV than casein, chicken or egg protein. Whey’s high BV means that consuming small amounts can have greater muscle building / toning results than eating other (more…)
